P H I L I P H I N G E
My paintings describe a series of familiar events which explore the psychological space of the everyday; more specifically the backyard. I approach this setting with a dystopian sense of humor as I traverse the environment through re-invention, appropriation, and artifice. The source material, the armature of the painting, is strained and subjected to shifts and alterations; subverting its operational space. Lawn chairs and hoses become lively participants with their figural counterparts, creating a vaguely menacing tableau. These disquieting scenes accumulate through continual working and reworking of the liminal painted duration, edging ever closer towards a perverted clarity. This procedure allows me to come to terms with the external world and my internalization of it; a place where formality and intuition can co-exist. Imagery is allowed to be specific while coexisting in contextual ambiguity, a partnership which creates tension between surface value and content. An exploration of the essence of experience is reinvented within the contours of the canvas.
